A moment of unexpected comedy unfolded at the White House when Vice President JD Vance accidentally broke the National Championship football trophy during Ohio State University’s visit. Videos circulating online show Vance lifting the prestigious award only for it to separate into two pieces, with the base crashing to the floor while the top portion was caught by a quick-thinking attendee.
The awkward moment occurred as President Donald Trump stood nearby, seemingly unaware of the mishap as he continued posing with a football helmet. Social media quickly erupted with reactions, with some users pointing out the trophy was designed to separate – the top meant to be held aloft while the base remains stationary.

White House reporter Philip Melanchthon Wegmann clarified the trophy’s design, explaining it was intentionally made in two parts by New York-based UAP Polich Tallix. However, many couldn’t resist poking fun at the VP’s handling skills, with one user joking “That trophy is a metaphor for the US economy” and another noting “The best part is watching them all laugh at him!”
Vance later addressed the incident on Twitter with humor, writing: “I didn’t want anyone after Ohio State to get the trophy so I decided to break it.” While some appreciated the self-deprecating response, others suggested he should have simply admitted to the mistake.
