Retail giant Target is shuttering nine locations across four states as it struggles to combat escalating theft and organized retail crime. Despite enhancing security measures, the company faces persistent challenges.
The affected stores are:
New York City: Harlem (517 E 117th St.)
Seattle: University Way (4535 University Way NE) and Ballard (1448 NW Market St., Ste. 100)
San Francisco/Oakland: SF Folsom (1690 Folsom St.), Oakland Broadway (2650 Broadway), and
Pittsburg (4301 Century Blvd.)
Portland: Galleria (939 SW Morrison St.), Powell (3031 SE Powell Blvd.), and Hollywood (4030 NE Halsey St.)
These closures leave:
96 Target stores remaining in New York City, employing over 20,000 team members
22 stores remaining in Seattle, with nearly 4,000 team members
32 stores remaining in the San Francisco/Oakland area, with over 6,400 team members
15 stores remaining in Portland, with more than 2,500 team members
Target operates over 150 stores in these regions. To combat crime, the retailer is:
Implementing locked cases for high-risk merchandise
Collaborating with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Homeland Security Investigations division
Target acknowledges that solo efforts are insufficient. “We will continue making significant investments, but we cannot solve this issue alone,” the company stated.
As Target seeks solutions, customers and employees will feel the impact of these closures.
