In a heartwarming display of compassion, a Georgia nurse has gone above and beyond to ensure a dying patient’s cherished dog finds a loving home. Kim Still, a dedicated nurse at Northside Hospital Gwinnett, formed a strong bond with an elderly cancer patient, who had no family except for her devoted chihuahua, Jax.
As the patient’s condition worsened, her primary concern was Jax’s future. With no children or immediate family, the dog was her sole companion. Kim recalled the patient’s anxiety, knowing that Jax would be left alone.
Following the patient’s passing, Kim was instructed to take Jax to a shelter. However, fearing the dog’s uncertain fate and potential euthanasia, Kim made a selfless decision – she adopted Jax herself.
The DAISY Foundation recognized Kim’s extraordinary act of kindness, awarding her the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. Kim’s actions not only eased her patient’s final moments but also ensured Jax’s well-being.
Kim reflected on the profound connection she shared with her patient, saying, “You never know the bond you’ll form with some people when you care for them.” Her patient’s gratitude and peaceful passing were a testament to Kim’s exceptional care.
Now, Jax has found a new lease on life with Kim, who describes him as “the most charming and loving dog.” Kim’s kindness has given Jax a second chance, and her patient’s legacy lives on through their shared love for the little chihuahua.
Kim’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the transformative power of compassion and the enduring impact of healthcare professionals on patients’ lives. Her selfless act has inspired many, demonstrating that nursing is not just a profession, but a calling to care for the whole person – and their loved ones.
