A Friendly Solution to a Bright Nuisance

When my neighbor installed blinding floodlights over their garage, my wife and I knew we had to think outside the box to resolve the issue. The lights, triggered by our neighbor Susan’s fear of the dark, made it impossible for us to sleep. We needed a solution that wouldn’t escalate into a full-blown feud.

At first, the lights didn’t seem like a huge concern. However, as the nights went by, the dazzling LEDs became a constant source of frustration. My wife Gia tried talking to Susan, explaining our predicament, but Susan was resolute. “I need them,” she said. “They make me feel safe when Mark is away.”

We attempted various solutions – blackout shutters, heavy drapes, and even rearranging our bedroom furniture – but nothing worked. I decided to talk to Susan myself, offering to install a timer for the lights, but she refused to budge. Her fear took precedence over our need for sleep.

I then approached Mark, expecting him to be more understanding. However, he too prioritized Susan’s comfort over our discomfort. As the sleepless nights dragged on, I grew increasingly frustrated. Gia reminded me that escalating the situation wasn’t the answer.

One day, Gia suggested a clever solution. While she and Susan were out, I snuck over to the Thompsons’ house and loosened the lights until they flickered out. For the first time in weeks, we enjoyed a quiet, dark night.

However, the reprieve was short-lived. Mark tightened the bulbs again, and the lights came back on. This back-and-forth continued for over a year, with me loosening the bulbs and Mark tightening them again.

One Saturday morning, Mark approached me while I was pruning the hedges. He was puzzled by the lights frequently going out and the bulbs loosening. I casually suggested that the vibrations from the street traffic might be the culprit. To my surprise, Mark agreed, and eventually decided that the lights weren’t worth the trouble.

In the end, our subtle approach paid off. We resolved the issue without creating any ill will. Sometimes, a little creativity and patience are all you need to keep the peace while getting what you need.
