Those Tiny Red Dots on Your Skin? Here’s Why You Should Pay Attention

Medical professionals across the UK are sounding the alarm about a surge in scabies cases, urging people not to ignore those mysterious small red dots appearing on their skin. The condition, caused by microscopic mites burrowing under the skin, has seen cases double in some regions, particularly in northern England.

The telltale signs include intense itching (especially at night), rashes, and clusters of tiny red spots, often starting between fingers or on wrists. While not life-threatening, scabies can lead to secondary infections if left untreated. The condition spreads easily through close contact, shared bedding, or clothing, making schools and university campuses particularly vulnerable.

Health experts emphasize there’s no shame in seeking treatment. “These mites don’t discriminate,” says Professor Kamila Hawthorne of the Royal College of General Practitioners. “Special creams can eliminate them, but first you need to get diagnosed.” The treatment protocol includes washing all fabrics at 60°C or sealing them in bags for three days to kill any lingering mites.
