What should have been a joyful celebration of my son’s graduation turned into a family disaster. My in-laws had organized a fancy dinner for twelve relatives at an upscale restaurant. Thinking it would be nice for my parents to join since we were celebrating their grandson too, I invited them along. Big mistake.
When the $1,700 bill arrived, my father-in-law paid but then demanded I cover the 18% tip because I’d “brought extra guests.” I was stunned. Were my parents really considered “extra” at their own grandson’s celebration? I refused to pay and left the restaurant, noticing my wife stayed strangely quiet through the whole ordeal.
The real shock came later that night when I opened a text from my wife: “Forget about me for some time. You ruined our only son’s celebration and embarrassed me in front of my entire family for a few hundred dollars.” I rushed home to find our bedroom half-empty – she’d taken most of her belongings. Three days later, she still won’t answer my calls.
I understand she’s upset, but shouldn’t she be standing up for me? Her father was the one who treated my parents like unwanted strangers. Now I’m left wondering – was I really in the wrong here?
