Missy was overjoyed when she found out she was going to have their second child in 2002. Already having two beloved boys, hearing that there would be a third made her even happier. They were happy for a short time, but Missy lost the baby between eight and ten weeks into the pregnancy.
Missy felt terrible pain in her body and in her heart after this terrible loss. She was scared at the thought of having to have surgery to remove what might have been their child. When an embryo settles in the fallopian tube instead of the uterus, this is called a tubal pregnancy. It made their feelings even more complicated.
Even though it hurt, Jase and Missy held on to the hope of getting pregnant again. Not long after they lost the baby, they found out they were going to have another one. This time it would be a girl, and they named her Mia.
But the news was sad because they knew Mia would have her own problems because of a birth defect she was born with. Missy thought the problems they would have as a family were too much to handle, but Jase saw things differently. Suddenly, he understood that their daughter’s health and happiness were more important than how she looked. He changed his mind and decided to enjoy Mia’s life and give her the love and support she needed.
Mia has had several surgeries to deal with her illness over the course of her short life. Even though it’s been hard on her physically and emotionally, Mia has shown amazing grit and strength. In a moving scene from the last episode of Duck Dynasty’s fifth season, Mia had her fifth surgery while her loving family was around her.
Mia’s strong faith has helped her and her family stay strong. She is sure that God is always with them and will help them through everything, no matter how hard life gets. As long as they were living, her father told her, they could get through anything together.
