Kelly McGillis, who played his love interest in the movie, on the other hand, did the exact opposite.
It’s hard to spot the 65-year-old actress these days because she has been through so much ageism in recent years.
I don’t think I was the only one who thought of Kelly McGillis when they saw Top Gun: Maverick, the follow up to the popular movie from the 1980s. A part of me hoped I would still get to see her even though I knew she wouldn’t show up.
Naturally, McGillis never showed up, and in a touching scene, Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer got back in touch. According to McGillis, she wasn’t asked to join the group. In 2019, Entertainment Tonight asked her if the people who made Top Gun: Maverick had given her a part in the movie’s follow-up.
“Oh my god, no.” “I don’t think they ever will, because they didn’t,” McGillis said.
“The whole scene isn’t about me, in my opinion. I mean, I’m fat and old, and I look like my age.”
The 65-year-old actor didn’t seem to mind, though, that she wasn’t in Top Gun: Maverick, the big hit movie of 2022.
The woman said, “Instead of putting a value on all that other stuff, I’d much rather feel completely safe in my skin and who and what I am at my age.”
What really happened with her in Top Gun
In the 1980s, McGillis was one of only a few women who could make rates in the millions of dollars. In the movie Top Gun, the famous actress played Lisa Blackwood, an astronomer and training school teacher.

McGillis told the LA Times, “I don’t think anything was ready for what I guess was becoming a household name.”
It was very scary for me. My goal is not to be well-known. That movie really opened my eyes to how much I want to be an actor. It made me feel really unsafe. I wasn’t sure who I could still count on as a friend.
In fact, Charlie was based on another famous person named Christine Fox. Fox is a famous civilian flight teacher and mathematician who the producers met while they were doing research for the movie.
Going forward, she would have a great career at the Pentagon. As Acting Deputy Secretary of Defence, Fox was the highest post a woman had ever held in the Department of Defence.
It was kind of a luck that Kelly McGillis was chosen to play Charlie. She was going to be in another movie, but it didn’t happen. When Paramount called to ask her to work on Top Gun instead, McGillis agreed to do the script and drove to San Diego for the shoot.
I thought it looked like a Western in the sky. I didn’t expect it to be so beautifully drawn. “I think Tony Scott added so much to that movie visually,” she said.
In addition to being a sex icon because of her part in Top Gun, McGillis was praised for how she played herself on screen. Kelly and Cruise got along great off-set, and it was clear that they did too on screen.
“I believe Tom is great.” He’s the most adorable guy ever. He is very polite, honest, and true. It was fun for me too to work with Tom. “He’s amazing, in my opinion,” she said.
People at the time said that McGillis looked like Lauren Bacall, Grace Kelly, and Ingrid Bergman.
But Kelly was never going to really think about that comparison.
“I have never thought that I was very pretty.” In 1986, she told Intelligencer Journal, “I think that mainly I was very overweight and had a very low sense of self-worth when I was a teenager and just before puberty, which is when one forms their ideas about themselves.”

It would not be fair to McGillis to only talk about her role in Top Gun, even though that’s what many of us remember her for. She has done a lot more in her life and at work.
In 1985, she made a big splash in Hollywood with the role of an Amish widow in Tracks. When she wasn’t busy with Top Gun, she played a tough lawyer in the controversial movie The Accused. After that, McGillis was cast in a few films and TV shows in the 1990s, but none of them helped her career.
After that, the outspoken actor broke all the rules of society and quit Hollywood. In addition to refusing to act in the plays that were given to her, she cut off her blonde hair, quit Hollywood, had kids, and gained weight.
(“I think my priorities have just changed.”) She told Entertainment Tonight, “It wasn’t like I made a big decision to leave; other things just took precedence.”

But McGillis’ past always seemed to find her. The star from Top Gun says she wasn’t in Florida to get away; she was there to take care of personal matters.
She was uncomfortable with her sexuality and drank too much. For about a year, she was a bad person.
“I never really felt sad.” All I wanted was to be left alone and live my own life. I believe that if you have children, it is your duty to take care of them. She told The Daily Telegraph in 1999, “I wanted my kids to know me as Mommy, not as a movie star.”

In 2002, McGillis and Tillman broke up. In an interview with SheWired seven years later, she said that she was a lesbian. The star said that coming out has been hard for her since she was twelve years old.
“Life is an amazing journey that involves growing and changing as a person and accepting and loving yourself,” the speaker said.
McGillis met Melanie Leis, a barmaid, in Key West, where she was running her restaurant. The connection between them was unstable and harmful to themselves, and both of them went to treatment for drug abuse problems. McGillis drank a lot.
Still, the crime partners got married in New Jersey in 2010. Fred Tillman, who used to be married to McGillis, was at the civil union service.
McGillis told the Daily News, “He was and still is my best friend.” Before I had kids, I was gay. Being okay with who I am was really hard for me.

Kelly is said to be living in a log house in the hills above Hendersonville, North Carolina right now. Away from Hollywood, she likes living a quiet, happy life. She wears her grey hair short and pants because they are more comfortable.
In Asheville, North Carolina, I mostly teach acting one-on-one in a small workshop that is connected to a school. “I feel like it’s my time to give back, and I know how to do that,” she said in 2014.
The way McGillis looks today makes it look like she has given up on being an actress. Her last good performance was in the 2018 TV movie Maternal Secrets. She hasn’t been in a movie in a while.
The woman said, “Women my age talk about this all the time.” I don’t think this business is very good at taking care of women over 50. I do not like getting Botox, having my face lifted, or having my hair coloured. “I want to be a character actress when I grow up,” she said in 2013.
As was already said, Kelly was in the news a lot in 2022. Due to her absence from the movie, Top Gun: Maverick, people were wondering where she was and why she wasn’t in the sequel.
Kelly wasn’t in the movie because director Joseph Kosinski said he wanted to use different characters to go in a different direction. Kosinski said it wasn’t because of how she looked.
People who saw Kelly McGillis when she was at her best will always remember her as the hot stellar engineer. In a movie like the first Top Gun, she is the kind of woman who will never be matched. Of course.
She needs to be so much more beautiful and elegant to quit such a job to take care of herself and put her family first. That rocks my world more than anything else.
