The 16-year-old Korben White made a lot of waves on the internet with the flowing ballgown he wore to his high school prom. He wore a fiery red skirt and a tuxedo top with sequins that went perfectly with his fiery red hair.
After his mom Nina Green’s post went popular, which showed her teenage son getting ready for prom, devoted followers of the “woke” movement praised his flowing dress, while others played the shame game, saying it showed a parent “encouraging this kind of thing.”
His mother Nina Green told him when he was 12 that “he wanted to go to his school prom in a gown.”
Four years after saying he would, the teen, who goes by the name Miss Frou Frou and is a “sassy” drag queen, made it happen in 2022.
Green tells the BBC about what inspired her son. “With a tuxedo on top and a dress on the bottom, he wanted to go as himself while showing his feminine side. He was a big fan of American actor Billy Porter.” “He wanted to be Korben…but in a dress,” she said.
The sparkly red outfit with a white shirt and a big red bow made Korben’s big reveal very exciting. Both staff and students at Archbishop Sancroft High School in Harleston, Norfolk, cheered.
“As soon as he got out of the car, everyone cheered, and I and some of the teachers started crying because he was just being himself,” Korben’s happy mom declared. The people in his year group have been amazing and have been very helpful. Allowing your kid to be themselves will bring out the best in them.
Green, who was her son’s biggest fan, kept up her huge show of support with a tweet on July 1.
“At age 12, my son told me he wanted to wear a gown to his school prom,” Green writes next to a few pictures of Korben in the stunning dress. We finally did it after four years. His school’s response to him being himself was amazing, and I’m so proud of him.
Millions of people all over the world shared, commented on, and praised the beautiful young man in her post, which got a lot of attention.
Michelle Visage, a judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race, even said, “You are a wonderful, beautiful mother, and your child is a STAR.”
When Korben told Visage about his mother’s tweet, he said it was “very surreal.”
“She is such an inspiration to me, a wonderful celebrity, and I admire her so much,” he said.
Green said she only wanted to show her son “living his best life,” which made other parents look to her for help. She didn’t think her support would “go crazy.”
Some people shared pictures and stories of their children who were changing genders.
One writes, “I worry about my son. He wants to do something like this at prom, but I don’t think all the other students would support him.” Sad that homophobia is still a problem. Awesome job, mom, dad, and kid’s school!”
Someone else says, “I’m so happy for your son; he looked great!”Since my son is transgender, I had to pull him out of school for his mental health in January before his GCSEs (General Certificate of Secondary Education, which is offered in some parts of the UK). He had been bullied for three years. He always wore a tux to prom, so he missed out on the chance.
One more writer just says, “Absolutely stunning!” A suit was what my daughter wore to hers!”
At the same time, a lot of negative comments followed the positive ones. These comments show that not everyone is on the same social road.
“There is very little hope for civilization,” writes one, and “…vile, awake, and a failure as a parent in encouraging this kind of thing,” writes another. A boy of 12 should learn how to be a man and play football. But, unfortunately, people today use virtue signaling, like this tweet, to hurt their kids for life. How embarrassing.
Someone else on the Internet says that the support for Green’s post is scary. “A “boy” dressing like a “girl” is not natural at all—the support for it shows how messed up our world is.” In fact, one fan on the Internet says, “We live in a world where children should no longer pretend to be Indians but men should pretend to be women.” Terrible.”
But Green wasn’t going to give up in the face of the online hate. He was a staunch supporter.
The day after her tweet went viral, Green took her son to London Pride and posted a cute picture of the two of them.
Someone on the Internet said, “My boy did too, couldn’t be prouder. He’s also at London Pride today, 16 years old. It’s great, love and to you and yours.” and someone else said, “You both look great xx”
A third person writes, “Your son doesn’t look like a man anymore, some kind of fa****” and insults the mom.
Green writes on Twitter that she doesn’t care about the bad things that people say about her. She says that she hopes the relationship she has with Korben will help other kids and parents.
“I hope it makes people more accepting, lets proud parents know they’re not alone, and lets them celebrate their kids. I also want young people to know there is a support system there if they need it.” She went on, “You need to love your kids just the way they are.”
Kids like Korben Green are very brave for showing themselves in this way. He’s also very lucky to have a mom who is so loving and blocks out the noise so she can keep raising him the best way she knows how.
