Producer of “Pirates of the Caribbean,” Jerry Bruckheimer, has talked about the idea of Captain Jack Sparrow coming back to the series.
Due in large part to Johnny Depp’s performance as the rum-loving captain, the Pirates of the Caribbean movies have become one of the most popular movie series of the past 30 years.
Depp, who is now 60 years old, was in all five movies, from The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) to Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017).
But during Depp’s defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard over an opinion piece she wrote for the Washington Post in 2018, the Captain Jack star said that Disney had chosen to stay away from him.
This happened after Heard said she had been abused by her boyfriend (though she never named Depp).
While in court, Depp was asked: “If Disney came to you with $300 million and a million alpacas, nothing on this earth would get you to go back and work with Disney on a Pirates of the Caribbean film?”
And all he said was, “That is true.”
During his time as Sparrow, he also thought about his connection with the production company. He said, “Captain Jack Sparrow was a character I built from the ground up and gave a lot of myself to.”
“And also having worked on those films with those people, and having put a lot of my own rewriting, dialogue, scenes, and jokes and whatever they are,” he said to the jury back then. “I didn’t quite understand how, after that long relationship, and quite a successful relationship, certainly for Disney, that suddenly I was guilty until proven innocent.”
Now Bruckheimer has said that he has talked to Depp about making a sixth movie. He has been talking about this for a long time.
During an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Bruckheimer said again that he “loves” Depp in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. When asked if Depp might have a cameo in the future Pirates of the Caribbean reboot, Bruckheimer left the door open.
“If it were up to me, of course.” This is great having Depp here, said Bruckheimer. “I love him as an actor and as a friend […] He and I have talked, but we’ll see what happens.
There are rumors that the new Pirates movie will have more female leads than the others. Both Margot Robbie and Ayo Edebiri are said to be in the running for the lead part.
Because of Heard’s claims, Disney has never said that Depp would not be in any more Potter pictures.
“We want to bring in a new energy and vitality,” Sean Bailey, head of production at Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture, told The Hollywood Reporter in 2018. Although I enjoy the Pirates movies, Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese are quite interesting because they want to make fun of them. In that case, I have given them the job.”
There is also a plea from passionate fans that wants Depp to come back. A Change.org page called “We want JOHNNY DEPP back as CAPTAIN JACK SPARROW” has more than 890,000 signatures already.
It’s clear that Depp loves this part, and fans would love to see him come back. Keep an eye on this spot and never say never.
