Nyakim Gatwech thought that living in America would be “like heaven” after spending her childhood in refugee camps in Ethiopia and Kenya.
But when she got to Buffalo, when she was about 14, Gatwech spent a lot of time by herself crying over how people treated her because of how dark her skin was.

The South Sudanese beauty who now lives in Minnesota was picked on for years because of her dark, glowing skin. She was told things like, “You don’t take showers.” You have dirt on your skin because of this. That is, “Smile Nyakim so we can see you.” We do not see you.
