Alba’s life took an unexpected turn when she was turned away by her mother and then by 20 other families who were interested in adopting her.
The story of Luca Trapanese adopting baby Alba has captured many hearts. This is particularly notable because it’s rare for social services to allow a single, gay man to adopt a child.
However, in Luca’s case, an exception was made. And we are all the better for it.

According to the BBC, Luca, a 41-year-old from Italy, has chronicled his journey to fatherhood in a book. Alba, his daughter, has Down syndrome.
During a radio interview, Luca shared that his story is unique because it “challenges stereotypes about fatherhood, religion, and family.”
In Italy, adoption can be especially difficult for gay or single individuals.

Luca explained, “They told me I’d only be considered for a child who was ill, had a serious disability, or had behavioral issues. I was okay with that.”
Luca adopted Alba in 2017 when she was just 13 days old. Twenty families had turned her down because of her Down syndrome.
“Alba brought me joy and made me feel complete. I’m proud to be her dad,” Luca said.

Luca has extensive experience working in care centers for people with special needs and always dreamed of becoming a dad. His passion for helping others began at 14 after his best friend died of cancer.
He volunteered with organizations linked to the Catholic church, often aiding those who were very ill or disabled.
Despite not having a partner, Luca went ahead with adopting Alba. Today, she lives happily with her loving dad.

According to the BBC, Alba is a strong-willed little girl who can be quite stubborn. She loves playing, dancing, and being around people.
“It was my first time holding a newborn. Before Alba, I was always afraid. But when I held her, I knew I was ready to be her dad,” Luca shared. “I was so happy. She felt like my daughter immediately.”
