Mother Jaguar Eats First Cub Born By Artificial Insemination

The world of science constantly offers fascinating developments, and paying attention can reveal some truly surprising stories. One such recent event in Brazil involves the birth of a jaguar cub, a significant milestone achieved through artificial insemination.

This breakthrough was a big step forward for scientific research, particularly in efforts to preserve endangered species. However, the joy was short-lived as the cub tragically died shortly after birth, an outcome that startled many.

In an unexpected turn of events, the mother jaguar, after giving birth successfully through artificial insemination, ended up eating her own cub. While this may sound shocking, such behavior is relatively common in nature, especially among carnivores.

The mother, a five-year-old jaguar named Bianca, was artificially inseminated, and 104 days later, she gave birth to the cub. Sadly, the cub passed away just two days after birth.

A spokesperson explained, “We don’t know the exact reason for the cub’s death and cannot confirm if the mother killed it, as the monitors did not capture any footage on the second day. Bianca was a first-time mother, which might have influenced the outcome. The veterinary team couldn’t perform a necropsy since the cub had already been eaten.”

A video was released showing the birth process, including footage of veterinarians sedating a healthy male jaguar and extracting the specimen used for reproduction. Bianca was one of five female jaguars involved in the experiment. Despite this unfortunate outcome, researchers are likely to continue their efforts to achieve success in the future.
