Cher may not attend her son Chaz Bono’s upcoming wedding due to a reported rift between the iconic singer and her first-born child, Chaz Bono.
Cher’s son, Chaz Bono, was born on March 4, 1969, during her marriage to Sonny Bono. Initially named Chastity Bono, Chaz came out as a lesbian before undergoing a female-to-male gender transition from 2008 to 2010.
Chaz Bono’s Journey and Family Tensions
Chaz came out to his parents as a lesbian at 18. In a 2011 interview with the Daily Mail, he reflected, “I’d look at other girls my age and feel perplexed by their interest in fashion or which boy was the cutest.”
Chaz shared more about his journey in his book, Family Outing: A Guide to the Coming Out Process for Gays, Lesbians, and Their Families, stating, “As a child, I always felt different. At 13, I realized I was gay.”
Cher, a long-time supporter of the LGBTQ community, admitted that accepting Chaz’s identity was initially challenging for her. “It was very unlike me to have a problem with Chaz being gay, but it disappeared quickly,” she told CNN in 2020.
Despite their efforts, Cher and Chaz have faced ongoing challenges in their relationship.
Cher Likely to Miss Chaz’s Wedding
As Chaz prepares to marry his fiancé, Shara Blue Mathes, reports indicate that Cher will not be attending the wedding. This decision comes after Cher’s unsuccessful attempts to gain conservatorship over her other son, Elijah Allman, who struggles with addiction.
Chaz claimed Cher opposes Elijah’s reconciliation with his wife, Marieangela King. Cher’s efforts to control Elijah’s assets were thwarted in court due to insufficient time to prepare a case against her petition.
Sources close to the situation told In Touch that the relationship between Chaz and Cher has worsened. “Chaz and Shara are removing Cher from the guest list entirely and don’t feel too bad about it either,” the source said, adding, “They want a simple ceremony without Cher’s theatrics.”
With tensions high between Cher and both of her children, Chaz and Elijah have reportedly decided to distance themselves from their mother.
