Luke was a six-year-old boy who surprised his mother, Amy, one day after school by claiming he had a twin.
For many years, Amy enjoyed a happy life with her husband Jeff and their son Luke, forming a close-knit family.
One afternoon, Luke returned from school eager to share his day with his mom.
“Mom,” Luke began excitedly, “I swear…”
Amy quickly interrupted, “Remember what we said about swearing?”
“Mom,” he insisted, “I’m serious. Luna is my twin sister!”
“Luke,” Amy replied, puzzled, “You’re our only child.”
“No, Mom! I’m telling you, Luna and I have the same birthday, and we look alike. Even the teachers think we’re twins.”
As Amy continued cooking, Luke went on about Luna—her likes, dislikes, and favorite things.
“Mom, she’s amazing. You’ll love her!” Luke added.
Since Jeff wasn’t home yet, Amy figured Luna was a special friend to Luke.
“Do you have a photo of Luna?” she asked. Luke dashed to his room and brought back the class photo. When he pointed out Luna, Amy was taken aback by the uncanny resemblance between her and Luke.
Even her mother-in-law noticed the striking similarity.
“Why don’t we invite Luna over?” Amy suggested. “If her mom agrees, you two can have a playdate.”
“Do you think she’ll really come?” Luke asked, excitedly.
“I’ll talk to her mom tomorrow when I drop you off,” Amy assured him with a smile.
That night, when Jeff came home exhausted, Amy decided not to bring up the topic. He went straight to bed after dinner, leaving Amy awake with her thoughts.
The next morning, Amy met Penelope, Luna’s mother, at school drop-off and arranged the playdate.
“Luna talks about Luke all the time,” Penelope said. “It’ll be great for them to spend time together outside of school.”
On the day of the playdate, Jeff noticed the freshly baked cookies and asked, “What’s going on? Are we having guests?”
“Yes,” Amy replied, but she kept the details to herself, feeling suspicious.
When Luke opened the door for Luna, she ran straight to Jeff. Jeff went pale as he saw Luna and Penelope standing there.
“Daddy!” Luna shouted. “I told you she was my sister!” Luke chimed in. Penelope looked stunned.
While the kids played, the adults sat down to talk.
“It happened a long time ago, Amy,” Jeff began. “It was just before we found out you were pregnant with Luke.”
Amy was shocked to learn about Jeff’s affair years ago and how it led to Luna’s birth. Penelope remained quiet while Jeff explained.
“So, you knew all this time?” Amy asked. “You knew?”
“I had to meet her,” Jeff admitted. “There was nothing else I could do.”
“I told Jeff to keep it a secret,” Penelope said softly. “I didn’t mind being a single mom to Luna, and my family supported me.”
“I never wanted this to happen,” Jeff said, regretfully.
“Why did you put the kids in the same school?” Amy questioned. “Did you think they’d never meet?”
Penelope spoke up, “Jeff didn’t know. I enrolled Luna recently. He hardly knows anything about her—it’s what he wanted.”
Feeling overwhelmed, Amy stepped outside to watch Luke and Luna play. Her trust in Jeff was shattered, but for Luke’s sake, she agreed to try couples counseling.
