In Northeast Ohio, a peculiar animal has caught the attention of locals, leaving many puzzled about its true identity. Dubbed the “squnk,” this creature appears to be a cross between a squirrel and a skunk.
The “squnk” boasts the body of a squirrel but is distinguished by its striking dark black fur and a white-tipped tail reminiscent of a skunk. This unique appearance has sparked widespread interest and curiosity.
In recent months, multiple sightings of the “squnk” have been reported across Ohio, with photos circulating widely on social media. Some speculate that the “squnk” might be a hybrid between the two animals.
However, what was initially thought to be a hybrid has been identified as a black squirrel. Despite lacking any skunk DNA, this creature is quite rare and fascinating. According to Smithsonian Magazine, the black squirrel is likely an eastern grey squirrel with a gene mutation causing its darker pigmentation. This mutation often results from breeding between eastern grey squirrels and fox squirrels.
Black squirrels are exceptionally rare, with only one in every 10,000 squirrels exhibiting this darker coat. Their dark fur provides a thermal advantage, helping them maintain a higher body temperature in cold climates.
Interestingly, black squirrels hold a special place at Kent State University. In 1961, ten black squirrels were released on the campus, and they have since become an enduring symbol of the university.
