Tired of their mischievous cat Lucky’s penchant for ruining entry rugs, the author embarked on a creative project to replace the damaged laminate flooring with stylish hexagon tiles. Despite the rug’s rubbery texture and pattern, Lucky always found a way to leave his mark, raising concerns about the subfloor’s integrity.
Inspired by their kitchen flooring, the author opted for hexagon tiles to create a durable and visually appealing entryway. After tracing and cutting out the old flooring, they prepared the space for the new tiles.
To address potential moisture issues, they applied a waterproofing membrane and liquid sealant, ensuring a secure and long-lasting installation. The tiles were then laid with rapid-setting mortar, followed by a patient grouting process.
To allow for flexibility and movement, the author left exterior gaps between the tiles and other flooring for caulking. While grouting can be messy, it’s a crucial step in the process. A helpful tip: use baby wipes to remove excess grout film from the tiles.
The final touch involved caulking the edges, hiding any irregular cuts and creating a seamless look. The completed floor not only solved the cat-related problems but also became a practical and visually appealing entryway, perfect for withstanding wet and muddy shoes.
This project, born out of necessity, transformed a ruined floor into a functional and beautiful space, proving that creativity and determination can lead to a purr-fect solution!
