Teen idol Robby Benson, known for his iconic roles in “Ice Castles” and “Beauty and the Beast,” recently celebrated his 67th birthday. However, his journey to this milestone was marked by harrowing health issues and a “sadistic” nurse. Through it all, his wife of 40 years, Karla DeVito, stood by him, playing a crucial role in his survival.
Benson’s health struggles began at 28 with a bovine valve replacement. Thirteen years later, the valve started causing problems, leading to multiple open-heart surgeries between 1998 and 2010. The second surgery was botched, resulting in breathing difficulties and a traumatic experience with a nurse who tied his hands to the bed.
Despite these challenges, Benson continued working and caring for his family, relying on his wife for support. Karla DeVito was instrumental in finding doctors and ensuring he received proper treatment. Benson credits her with saving his life, stating, “She helped me find doctors… I’m alive because of her.”
Their love story began on Broadway in “The Pirates of Penzance,” where they met and fell in love. With two children, Zephyr and Lyric, they celebrated their 40th anniversary, a testament to their enduring love and commitment.
Benson’s journey teaches us the importance of love, support, and advocacy in overcoming adversity. As he said, “When we’re together… we can handle anything. Anything.
