A day at the beach is the perfect way to beat the heat, but one Massachusetts mom’s terrifying experience is a reminder that even the ocean can hold hidden dangers.
Heather Cassini is still shaken after her 10-year-old son Declan suddenly fell ill while swimming at Hampton Beach in New Hampshire on July 4. At first, she thought he was just exhausted from playing in the waves, but as they made their way back to their spot, Declan became disoriented and collapsed.
Cassini, who is pregnant, was frantic as her son stumbled and fell again, losing consciousness and vomiting. Luckily, a group of quick-thinking women nearby sprang into action, keeping him conscious and warm until paramedics arrived.
After a harrowing ordeal, Declan was diagnosed with hypothermia from the chilly 52-degree ocean water. Cassini was shocked, having never considered the risk of cold shock on a sweltering summer day.
Now, she’s spreading the word to warn other parents of the potential dangers lurking in the waves. “Just because your kids can handle the water doesn’t mean they’re immune to hypothermia,” she cautions.
Cassini’s scare is a vital reminder to always be aware of the ocean’s power, even on the hottest days. Share her story to spread the word and keep your loved ones safe!
