The basketball world is mourning the loss of Joe Bryant, father of the legendary Kobe Bryant, who passed away at 69. La Salle University’s athletics department confirmed the news, leaving fans and friends stunned.
Joe Bryant, affectionately known as “Jellybean,” was a talented player in his own right. He played college ball at La Salle University from 1973 to 1975 and was drafted by the Golden State Warriors in 1975. His professional career spanned multiple teams, including the Philadelphia 76ers, San Diego Clippers, and Houston Rockets, as well as stints in Europe.
After retiring from play, Joe returned to La Salle as a coach from 1993 to 1996. The university’s men’s basketball team remembered him fondly, saying he was a beloved member of their basketball family who will be deeply missed. The Philadelphia 76ers also paid tribute, acknowledging his status as a local basketball icon.
Joe’s legacy extends beyond his own playing career, influencing a new generation of players, including his son Kobe. The Bryants’ contributions to basketball will be forever remembered and cherished.
This loss comes just months after the tragic passing of Kobe and his daughter Gianna in a helicopter crash. Our thoughts and condolences go out to the Bryant family during this difficult time.
