Dick and Rick Hoyt’s story is a testament to the power of love, determination, and hard work. Despite the odds against them, this father-son duo has inspired millions worldwide with their remarkable achievements.
Born with cerebral palsy, Rick was confined to a wheelchair, but his parents refused to give up on him. They raised him as any other child, and with the help of a special computer, Rick was able to communicate and attend public school.
At 15, Rick asked his father to help him participate in a 5-mile race to raise money for a paralyzed lacrosse player. This sparked a journey that would take them to over 1,100 endurance events, including 72 marathons and six Ironman Triathlons.
Dick, a retired Lieutenant Colonel, trained tirelessly with his son, pushing him in a wheelchair while running and cycling. He even swam while pulling Rick on a raft during triathlons. Their bond grew stronger with each race, and Dick improved his fitness to the point where he could achieve a personal record of a 5K run in 17 minutes.
The Hoyts founded the Hoyt Foundation to help young people with disabilities achieve normality through sports. Their legacy continues to inspire, and a bronze statue in their honor was unveiled near the start of the Boston Marathon.
Though Dick passed away in 2021, his son remembers him as a quiet man who always put others first. Rick credits his father’s determination and strength for their incredible achievements. Their story is a reminder that with support and love, anything is possible.
