A Heartbreaking Text, a Devastating Loss: The Story of a 14-Year-Old Boy’s Final Moments

In the midst of a school mass shooting, a 14-year-old boy’s text to his mom revealed his fear and desperation. The boy, later identified as Mason Schermerhorn, was one of the four victims who lost their lives in the tragic incident at Apalachee High School in Georgia.

According to Ronald Clark, a youth minister and chaplain, Schermerhorn’s mom had received a text from her son saying he was hiding in a restroom. Clark, who was helping with the response efforts, tried to assist the mom in finding her son but later discovered that he was among the victims.

The text conversation between Schermerhorn and his mom, revealed by WSB-TV, showed the boy’s fear and love for his mom. “School shooting rn. I’m scared, pls, I’m not joking,” he texted, followed by a heartbreaking “I love you” when his mom said she was leaving work.

Schermerhorn’s sister, Alanna Wallace, spoke out about the tragedy, describing her brother as a wonderful person who loved everyone, regardless of their differences.

She shared heartwarming videos and memories of her brother, who enjoyed playing video games, learning to play the trumpet, and exploring virtual fantasy worlds.

Wallace said she is trying to channel her brother’s positive energy to cope with the loss, surrounded by supportive friends and community.

The family and friends of the victims are in our thoughts and prayers as they navigate this difficult time. RIP, Mason Schermerhorn and the other victims who lost their lives in this senseless tragedy.
